Just Another Guy with Opinions

Archive for the ‘Uncategorized’ Category

I am of the opinion that we (the USA) should not have gotten involved with Iraq in the first place……but now that we are there; what is the best way to proceed so that our troops can come home?

Why not spilt up the country into its three main ethnic religious divisions (the Kurds, the Shiites and the Sunnis). From all indications these groups have never gotten along with each other and each would probably be happier in their own “space”. Is Iraq truly a country or just groups of peoples living together in a designated area of the middle east call “Iraq”?

In the good old days of the British Empire, the British in their wisdom, carved out artificial nation states all over their territories (Africa, Middle East, Asia). Many times this was done without regard to the wishes of the indigenous population who lived there. This was the case in Iraq. And ever since gaining independence this has been a major source of contention between the peoples who have been forced to live together.

No one doubts that if the US were to leave Iraq tomorrow there would be civil war, because for whatever reason these peoples cannot or will not live together in peace. They don’t see themselves as Iraqis. They are Kurd. They are Sunni. They are Shiite! So why should the have to live together under one nation? Would it be so bad if each group had its own nation?

I know “OIL” comes into the picture somehow, and who controls which parts of Iraq, but I am sure that a formula could be worked out to share oil revenues, if necessary.

This would give the various groups their own sovereignty and dignity and peace of mind. Iraq is the result of irrational British imperialism and should be done away with. Give the people who live in the region a chance to build their own nations based on what make sense to THEM not US.

Posted by shadmia on June 6, 2011

This is a really sad story. Condolences to the family.

A 13-year-old Arizona boy was killed in a freak accident after a baseball hit him over the heart as he tried to bunt, officials in his Little League said Friday.

Hayden Walton went for the bunt during a game Tuesday night in the close-knit northern Arizona city of Winslow, said Jamey Jones, a Winslow Little League official.

“He took an inside pitch right in the chest,” Jones said. “After that he took two steps to first base and collapsed.”

He died the next morning at a local hospital.

Police Officer Pepper Sprays Baby Squirrel

Posted by shadmia on April 13, 2011

I wonder what kind of lesson the kids learned from this experience: How to handle a baby squirrel? How police handle defenseless lifeforms? The power of pepper spray? There has just got to be a lesson somewhere, right?

Officer Davis of the¬†Mesquite Police Department, Texas was “protecting” of group of children at¬†Kimbrough Middle School from a baby squirrel. The video was taken by one of the students at the school.¬†Students are heard pleading for the officer to stop, shouting things like “Don’t spray him!

Mesquite Police Department has defended the officer’s actions:

Sgt. Wes Talley said the officer stood between a group of students and the animal because he thought it may have been rabid. Talley said after several unsuccessful attempts to scare the squirrel away, the officer used his pepper spray on it to protect the welfare of the students.

There is a happy ending to this story:

After determining that the squirrel had done nothing wrong, animal control officers reportedly cared for the squirrel at a shelter before releasing it back into the wild. No charges are expected to be filed.

Stewart, Colbert Show Different Approach To Tucson Shooting

Posted by shadmia on January 12, 2011

Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert truly do give us an alternativ¬≠e point of view. There is no other way to say that what happened in Tucson is nothing but a national tragedy. The approach by both anchors were different but their message was clear. Don’t add to the insanity of one horrible act by implicatin¬≠g the political debate.

See the Jon Stewart show here.    See Steven Colbert here.

Sure the politicians need to tone down the rhetoric and maybe this will be a wakeup call to do just that, but insanity is insane and therefore not logical, so to apply logic to an illogical situation does not lead to any further understanding.

Let us learn from what happened in Tucson and even use this incident to retrospectively take a look at our lives, our actions and our attitudes and make the necessary changes to influence the future, not only our own but also of those around us who are watching and taking cues from what we do or say.

Posted by shadmia on January 10, 2011

Have these kids gone insane??

Six girls (aged 12 to 13 years old) have been arrested after students were invited on Facebook to take part in “Attack a Teacher Day” at two middle schools –¬†Carson Middle School and¬†Eagle Valley Middle School – both of which are in Carson City, Nevada.¬†The girls were booked on a misdemeanor charge of communicating threats. Their names were not released.

School shootings really happen. That’s why we took it seriously,” Sadler told The Associated Press on Friday. “It’s not OK, and it’s not funny in this day and age if you’re going to make a threat against a teacher.”

Jared Lee Loughner Identified As Gabrielle Giffords Shooter

Posted by shadmia on January 8, 2011

It really doesn’t matter WHY this¬†Congresswoman¬†(Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz) and so many others were shot, some fatally by 22-year-old Jared Lee Loughner. The killer is in custody and hopefully if there were any accomplice¬≠s they will also be caught. It also doesn’t matter what his politics were. He is a killer and if anyone ever deserved the death penalty, it is this man.

What this incident shows is that there are crazy people out there who are capable of doing a great deal of damage. It also shows that the atmosphere created by the political climate is toxic and has the potential to encourage unbalanced people to act in antisocial and unpredictable ways.

People in position of influence need to curtail their message of hate because it is permeating our society. Talk of “death panels” and “baby killers” do nothing to illuminate an issue or resolve a dispute. It can however be used by unstable persons as ammunition for their evil schemes.

We need to bring back civility to a nation deeply divided by partisan politics and maybe we can create an atmosphere of mutual respect even if we disagree with each other.

My best wishes go to all the victims of this horrible crime.

WE NEED TO STOP THE VIOLENCE!
