Sen. Larry Craig Resigns

Posted by shadmia on September 3, 2007

“It is with sadness and deep regret that I announce that it is my intent to resign from the Senate effective Sept. 30”

It was with these words that Sen. Larry Craig told the nation that after 25 years in Congress he would do what is best for Idaho and the nation. After many days of protesting his innocence after being accused of soliciting sex from an undercover police officer, and pleading guilty to a misdemeanor related to the incident, he bowed to the tremendous pressure for him to resign. He had already been stripped of his responsibilities in the Senate and still faces a Senate ethics investigation. Many members of his own party had made it clear that his resignation was expected.

President George W. Bush called Craig from the White House after the senator’s announcement on Saturday and told him he knew it was a difficult decision to make, White House spokesman Scott Stanzel said.

“Senator Craig made the right decision for himself, for his family, his constituents and the United States Senate,” Stanzel said.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said that Craig “made a difficult decision, but the right one.”

“It is my hope he will be remembered not for this, but for his three decades of dedicated public service,” McConnell said.

The story of the fallen Senator is by no means over but after his announced resignation, public interest in him is bound to wane. Justice has been served and Larry Craig will no longer serve the needs of Idaho in the Congress……..end of story! That would make a great Hollywood ending. But in real life the ex-Senator’s story is not done. Whether he is gay or not may never conclusively be known but the accusations and his actions have created the impression that he is indeed gay.

Being gay does not prevent anyone from serving in Congress or performing any other job for that matter but being dishonest about who or what you are says something about your character. Actions and words should complement each other and when they don’t…………well the ex-Senator is one good example!
